As I’m writing this, Memorial Day 2007 - otherwise known as Hypocritical Public Orgy of Pseudo-Patriotism Day 2007 - is nearly over, thank God. I hate this day. My reasons are legion, but since 2001, I’ve come to hate it more with every passing year.
Most of all, I hate the fact that it’s an excuse for a national public orgy of fake grief, fake patriotism, fake justification for a criminal act of genocidal proportions that we’ve allowed our country to commit. No, it’s not that I hate the troops. No, it’s not that I don’t think there are circumstances when a nation should fight. But these are not and have never been such circumstances. And now - and now - we’re letting the War-Criminal-In-Chief make political hay out of American soldiers dead in the name of a war crime?!
How the fuck does Commander Comma Splice have the balls to do this?
President Bush on Monday honored U.S. troops who have fought and died for freedom and expressed his steely resolve to succeed in the war in Iraq. "As before in our history, Americans find ourselves under attack and underestimated," he said.
Bush marked his sixth Memorial Day as a wartime president with a somber speech at Arlington National Cemetery. He said he hoped the United States will always prove worthy of the sacrifices fallen troops have made, and recognized the grief suffered by families and friends of troops killed in war, most recently in Afghanistan and Iraq.
[Ed.note: Oh, and Deb? What the fuck are you doing swooning about "steely resolve," anyway? Somebody yank those rose-colored blinders off her face, willya? It’s what the real world recognizes as "pig-headed, narcissistic, sociopathic douchebaggery." Not that you, as one of WaPo’s administration tools, have any hope of recognizing that, I know, but still . . . .
And if I have to hear/read/watch this little punk and his cult followers equate "attack on America" and "Iraq" one more time, I’m gonna throw something through the TV screen. No one from Iraq has ever attacked us, you stupid git. And that includes your daddy’s vanity war.]
"Now this hallowed ground receives a new generation of heroes _ men and women who gave their lives in places such as Kabul and Kandahar, Baghdad and Ramadi," he said. "Like those who came before them, they did not want war, but they answered the call when it came. They believed in something larger than themselves. They fought for our country, and our country unites to mourn them as one."
No, they didn’t want war, but you and Dick sure as hell did, didn’t you? Well, you got it, bub. Or, rather, our soldiers got it. And the Iraqi people got it. So when the fuck are Jenna and Barbara gonna go over there and get their GGW asses shot off? Surely they want some of your war, don’t they? No?
Oh, and about that "believing in something larger than themselves" bit? Well, if you mean your sense of insecurity, I guess you got that right. If you mean something like, oh, say, a real cause - well, not so much. Not at all, in fact. Congratulations, Fuckwit: You’ve managed to engineer the deaths of nearly 3,500 U.S. soldiers, completely, utterly in vain. In fact, in vain in both senses of the word: for no real or constructive purpose; and for your overweening, murderous vanity. (BTW, your vanity qualifies as "no real or constructive purpose." I know your mother led you to believe that the universe revolves around you, but guess what? Mommy was wrong. Of course, Mommy was wrong ever to have spawned you in the first place, but that’s another issue . . . .)
And in the middle of this hypocritical wallow in other people’s grief, the Chickenhawk-In-Chief actually had the fucking balls to throw in another pitch for his doomed "surge":
He noted that 174 Marines _ nearly one-fourth of a battalion _ recently asked to have their enlistments extended.
[Ed. note: Hey, Deb - you fact-check that? Mm-hmm, didn’t think so. "[N]early one-fourth of a battalion" - so fucking what? How about a little context? Like, say, how many battalions, total, are stuck in that shithole. And do we even know that they’re Marines in Iraq? How much do you want to bet that these soldiers - if they even exist - are in Afghanistan? Or, say, stationed stateside? What, no takers?]
I notice he didn’t have anything to say about the tens of thousands of soldiers who’ve been involuntarily re-upped yet again, or who have had their tours extended yet again.
And meanwhile, what do our illustrious Dems do?
Of course. They cave. Because, you know, if they didn’t roll over for the whiny brat in the White House, he might criticize them. Oh, the horror.
Fuck ‘em all.

you read my mind, rational animal. borders are scars on the earth, and border-specific holidays are scars on the human-psyche.

Well said.

Thanks, Silk. Obviously, I was outraged when I wrote this; that hasn’t changed, but I guess the feeling that my outrage mattered has. Thanks for reminding me that there are still people out there who care about the mess these criminals have made of our country.
And erizzle: I’ve missed you. I hope you’re still out there somewhere, and that the new year brings you everything you want and need.
